GlassBridge

The Glass Bridge exhibition, held at the Rangi Gallery in Dar es Salaam from 28 March to 4 April 2026, was a celebration of what happens when two different creative cultural traditions come together with a shared sense of purpose. Shanga, the beloved Arusha-based social enterprise that provides training and employment for artisans living with disabilities, joined forces with the master glassmakers of Murano, Italy, to create a collection of beautiful and meaningful pieces.

Working with internationally acclaimed designer Emmanuel Babled, the artisans transformed recycled glass sourced from local waste streams into objects which stood alongside some of the finest Italian glasswork. The exhibition was made possible through the support of the Italian Embassy, ITA (Italian Trade Agency), the Karimjee Group, Rangi Gallery, and Kukua. A highlight of the showcase was a special selection of Foscarini lamps paired with Shanga-designed glass pieces. It was a proud moment for all involved and testament to the incredible things that can be achieved when artisanal skill, sustainability and cultural exchange come together.

Loisaba Rhino© www.loisaba.com

When The Nature Conservancy (TNC) helped to establish Loisaba Conservancy in northern Kenya nearly fifteen years ago, they set out with an ambitious goal to restore a landscape that had been affected by decades of poaching. They also set about to do it in a way that involved and benefited local communities. This steadfast commitment led to wonderful results including the reintroduction of twenty-one black rhinos to Loisaba and the first black rhino calf born in the region in half a century. The success at Loisaba has helped to shape TNC Africa's wider focus going into 2026, with the organization directing its efforts towards what it calls the Africa Big 5 Irreplaceable Landscapes, which include East Africa's rangelands, the Congo Basin, the Lake Tanganyika Basin, the KAZA transfrontier area, and the Blue Benguela ocean current. Loisaba sits at the heart of this vision as a cornerstone of East Africa's rangelands, and its story is a wonderful example of what long-term, partnership-driven conservation can achieve.

Textures of Strawberries

At The Manor at Ngorongoro, the secret to an exceptional meal is grown in the back garden. The property’s farm-to-table journey began thanks to the property's unique local climate, allowing them to establish a thriving kitchen garden that now supplies the menu, sustained by organic compost and natural pesticides produced entirely on site. By the time an ingredient reaches the kitchen, it has travelled mere metres from the ground where it grew.

The star of the garden is the year-round strawberry harvest. Picked only when perfectly sun-ripened and moved straight to the kitchen, these strawberries retain a sweetness and fragrance that imported alternatives simply cannot match. The recipe below, Textures of Strawberries, showcases their versatility across a strawberry and lemongrass consommé, white chocolate mousse, baobab meringue, and a blueberry and lime blondie.

Nearby excursions include a visit to a Maasai market, the Museum of Natural History, or a day game drive with picnic lunch to Arusha National Park.

Meagan KLZ

Megan Alexander joined The Elewana Collection in April 2025 as Assistant General Manager at Kilindi Zanzibar, bringing with her a broad range of experience across luxury hospitality. She has been closely involved in shaping the guest experience at Kilindi, working alongside therapist Kadada Hamis to develop two new signature spa treatments that draw on the natural riches of the island.

Kilindi Zanzibar recently introduced two new coconut ritual treatments. Can you tell us a bit about what they are and what guests can expect?

We are delighted to introduce our Kilindi Coconut Ritual and Kilindi Coconut Journey, two treatments inspired by the nourishing and restorative qualities of coconut. Guests can expect a deeply relaxing experience beginning with a gentle coconut body scrub to exfoliate and soften the skin, followed by a warm coconut oil massage designed to ease tension and hydrate. The longer Coconut Journey also includes a Swahili Spices Bath and a rejuvenating facial, creating a full head-to-toe wellness experience that leaves guests feeling completely refreshed, radiant, and restored.

What inspired the creation of these new spa treatments?

The inspiration came from the island itself. Coconut is a natural, locally abundant ingredient in Zanzibar, long valued for its healing and nourishing properties. We wanted to create treatments that not only feel indulgent but also reflect the authenticity of our surroundings, using elements that are both meaningful and beneficial to the body.

How do these new treatments complement the existing spa menu at Kilindi Zanzibar?

These coconut rituals add a signature, locally inspired dimension to our spa menu. While our existing treatments focus on relaxation and therapeutic benefits, the coconut rituals bring in a more immersive, sensory journey that connects guests to the island. They offer a perfect balance between indulgence, wellness, and cultural authenticity.

How does the natural beauty and culture of Zanzibar influence the spa and wellness offerings at the property?

Zanzibar’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage are at the heart of everything we do. From the use of local ingredients like coconut and spices to the tranquil open-air spa setting surrounded by nature, every element is designed to reflect the island’s essence. The pace of life here encourages guests to slow down, reconnect, and embrace a more mindful approach to wellness. ‘Pole Pole’ as we say on the Island. Which means Slowly Slowly.

What do you think makes Kilindi Zanzibar such a special destination for guests looking for a wellness-focused getaway?

Kilindi offers a unique sense of space, privacy, and serenity that is ideal for wellness. With open-air villas, uninterrupted ocean views, and a peaceful atmosphere, guests are naturally encouraged to unwind and disconnect. Combined with personalised service, holistic spa experiences, and the beauty of the island, Kilindi becomes more than just a destination, it’s a place to truly relax, reset, and restore.
