The Government of Tanzania has announced the introduction of mandatory travel insurance for foreign nationals entering Mainland Tanzania with requirement to pay an insurance fee equivalent to US$44 in Tanzanian shillings.

This insurance will cover emergency medical treatment for visitors while in the country, loss of luggage, rescue services, and repatriation to the visitor's home country in case of emergency. The implementation, which has not been set but is imminent, will officially begin once the regulations for managing travel insurance are published in the Government Gazette. The payment method will initially be payment-on-arrival in cash (Tanzanian shillings), with an online portal anticipated for the future. They have not yet clarified how the existing Zanzibar mandatory travel insurance will be affected. We will update our partners and guests as soon as official confirmation, and detailed rollout procedures are announced.
