TMN High Tea with stunning views

The Government of Tanzania has announced the introduction of mandatory travel insurance for foreign nationals entering Mainland Tanzania with requirement to pay an insurance fee equivalent to US$44 in Tanzanian shillings.

This insurance will cover emergency medical treatment for visitors while in the country, loss of luggage, rescue services, and repatriation to the visitor's home country in case of emergency. The implementation, which has not been set but is imminent, will officially begin once the regulations for managing travel insurance are published in the Government Gazette. The payment method will initially be payment-on-arrival in cash (Tanzanian shillings), with an online portal anticipated for the future. They have not yet clarified how the existing Zanzibar mandatory travel insurance will be affected. We will update our partners and guests as soon as official confirmation, and detailed rollout procedures are announced.

ArtforConservation

In 2024, the Land & Life Foundation partnered with the African Conservation Centre (ACC) to launch Canvas for Change - a creative initiative that empowers students to explore conservation through art. Led by international artist Deborah Ross, the programme features watercolour workshops at schools across Amboseli, where students express critical environmental issues such as drought, flooding, and human-wildlife conflict through painting.

In December 2024, the programme culminated in an exhibition and art competition at Amboseli Sopa Lodge. Winning students received cash prizes, and all participants enjoyed lunch and gift bags courtesy of the hosts.

To extend the impact, select artworks were turned into greeting cards and A3 prints, now available at all Elewana properties. These products have proved so popular they are now on the fourth print run. Proceeds directly support the respective school wildlife clubs and student tuition for the winners of the competition. As of June 2025, Canvas for Change has raised over USD 6,000, a powerful testament to the role of creativity, education, and collaboration in advancing conservation. The campaign started with two schools and a third has just joined. The aim is to increase this figure further enhancing the lives and conservation awareness of students.

Mad dash Elephant calf Amboseli

The Amboseli Trust for Elephants has reported 108 calves born since the beginning of March with many more elephants pregnant. Whilst it is a joy to see the elephants with so many tiny calves playing, exploring and learning to use their trunks, the charity reminds us there are still so many threats to the complex lives of elephants. Left in peace with intact families, wise matriarchs, and older experienced musth males, elephants can thrive and express their full repertoire of behaviours within that amazing and rich life. However, poaching, sport hunting, culling, conflict, and habitat loss are still disrupting elephant lives in most of Africa.

To see how the Amboseli Trust for Elephants is working tirelessly to solve some of the problems and most important to secure the elephant range in the greater Amboseli ecosystem visit https://www.elephanttrust.org/.

Lewa WhiteRhino and Vehicle

Lewa Safari Camp is located in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, home to one of the most inspiring and successful community-based conservation programmes, as well as outstanding game viewing. An intimate set up, with just 11 ensuite safari tents and two-family suites, guests feel at one with nature whilst still enjoying the comforts and service that would be expected from a luxury safari property.

Wildlife viewing in the area is exceptional. Not only are guests pretty much guaranteed to witness the approximate 260 rhinos that call this sanctuary home but will also view other rare and endemic species including Grevy’s zebra, wild dogs, lions and chetahs. Some have compared the area “to setting foot into a Disney movie.”

In camp, there is no shortage of activities with a refreshing swimming pool, spa and options for bush walks, horse-riding (for experienced riders) and camel treks.

It would be remiss to visit Lewa without exploring the outstanding conservation work that takes place. Visits to the conservation museum and the conservation talk at Lewa HQ can easily be arranged and are highly recommended, as well as Lewa’s anti-poaching team which includes their anti-poaching dog sniffing canine unit.

Children’s activities are available including an in-camp bush walk and a dedicated kid’s menu.

Tarangire Treetops family safari

Alina Haq, Elewana’s Director of Marketing & Communications tells us about the joy of travelling with her children on safari and shares a few top tips for making it all run smoothly.

What were your children most taken with on their first safari?

Without a doubt, it was the unexpected magic of it all, spotting a lion pride just lounging under an acacia tree, giraffes moving gracefully in the distance, and even the smaller things like dung beetles and chameleons! I remember their sheer excitement at tracking paw prints in the ground with a guide, it made them feel like little adventurers in a real-life storybook.

But beyond the wildlife, it was the atmosphere that truly enchanted them, the golden light over the Mara plains, the scent of wild herbs carried on the breeze, the absolute stillness just before the sun rises, and those jaw-dropping skies that shift from blush pink to fiery orange and deep indigo. The landscape itself felt like something out of a dream, wide, wild, and full of wonder.

And then, of course, there was the Elewana team, warm, attentive, and endlessly kind. They made my children feel like VIPs from the moment we arrived. Whether it was crafting animal masks, helping them identify bird calls, or slipping them an extra marshmallow at the campfire, it was those thoughtful, personal touches that made the whole experience feel like magic. The staff truly became part of the adventure, guides, storytellers, and safari family all in one.

What in-camp amenities are essential for children?

For us, it’s a balance between comfort, curiosity, and creativity. We’ve found that child-friendly menus, flexible mealtimes, and shaded swimming pools are key. But beyond that, activities like guided nature walks (geared for kids), storytelling around the campfire, and having binoculars and animal checklists really help children feel involved and engaged. A welcoming, attentive team that embraces little guests makes all the difference.

What would you recommend parents pack for children?

Layers are your best friend, early mornings can be chilly and midday sun can be intense. I’d suggest packing:

  • A good sunhat and sunglasses
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Lightweight long-sleeved clothing (for sun and bug protection)
  • A favourite book or sketchpad for quiet downtime
  • Binoculars and a journal for animal spotting
And don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent suitable for children!

What do you think is the perfect age to introduce children to their first safari?

Every child is different, but I personally feel 5 and up is the sweet spot. At that age, they’re curious, observant, and able to appreciate both the excitement and the quieter moments. They can engage with guides, ask questions, and retain those “firsts”, the first leopard sighting, the first campfire night, as lifelong memories.

Tell us a little about what inspired you to introduce the Wildlife Warrior packs at Elewana properties
?

The idea came from watching my own children immerse themselves in safari life, asking endless questions, sketching animals, and trying to mimic bird calls. We realised that children process safari in a different, beautifully imaginative way. The Wildlife Warrior packs were designed to nurture that sense of wonder, with tools and resources that turn them into young conservationists. It’s about making the safari experience interactive, educational, and empowering, something that stays with them long after the trip ends.
