Alina Haq, Elewana’s Director of Marketing & Communications tells us about the joy of travelling with her children on safari and shares a few top tips for making it all run smoothly.
What were your children most taken with on their first safari?
Without a doubt, it was the unexpected magic of it all, spotting a lion pride just lounging under an acacia tree, giraffes moving gracefully in the distance, and even the smaller things like dung beetles and chameleons! I remember their sheer excitement at tracking paw prints in the ground with a guide, it made them feel like little adventurers in a real-life storybook.
But beyond the wildlife, it was the atmosphere that truly enchanted them, the golden light over the Mara plains, the scent of wild herbs carried on the breeze, the absolute stillness just before the sun rises, and those jaw-dropping skies that shift from blush pink to fiery orange and deep indigo. The landscape itself felt like something out of a dream, wide, wild, and full of wonder.
And then, of course, there was the Elewana team, warm, attentive, and endlessly kind. They made my children feel like VIPs from the moment we arrived. Whether it was crafting animal masks, helping them identify bird calls, or slipping them an extra marshmallow at the campfire, it was those thoughtful, personal touches that made the whole experience feel like magic. The staff truly became part of the adventure, guides, storytellers, and safari family all in one.
What in-camp amenities are essential for children?
For us, it’s a balance between comfort, curiosity, and creativity. We’ve found that child-friendly menus, flexible mealtimes, and shaded swimming pools are key. But beyond that, activities like guided nature walks (geared for kids), storytelling around the campfire, and having binoculars and animal checklists really help children feel involved and engaged. A welcoming, attentive team that embraces little guests makes all the difference.
What would you recommend parents pack for children?
Layers are your best friend, early mornings can be chilly and midday sun can be intense. I’d suggest packing:
- A good sunhat and sunglasses
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Lightweight long-sleeved clothing (for sun and bug protection)
- A favourite book or sketchpad for quiet downtime
- Binoculars and a journal for animal spotting
And don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent suitable for children!
What do you think is the perfect age to introduce children to their first safari?
Every child is different, but I personally feel 5 and up is the sweet spot. At that age, they’re curious, observant, and able to appreciate both the excitement and the quieter moments. They can engage with guides, ask questions, and retain those “firsts”, the first leopard sighting, the first campfire night, as lifelong memories.
Tell us a little about what inspired you to introduce the Wildlife Warrior packs at Elewana properties
?
The idea came from watching my own children immerse themselves in safari life, asking endless questions, sketching animals, and trying to mimic bird calls. We realised that children process safari in a different, beautifully imaginative way. The Wildlife Warrior packs were designed to nurture that sense of wonder, with tools and resources that turn them into young conservationists. It’s about making the safari experience interactive, educational, and empowering, something that stays with them long after the trip ends.
