Lewa Elephant

Last month, Meru County Governor H.E. Kawira Mwangaza, in collaboration with Lewa officials and Lewa Conservancy presented a 2.5-kilometre elephant fence to the Mutunyi community in Meru County. The donation of the fence is part of Lewa’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and community empowerment and was generously funded by the proceeds from the Lewa Safari Marathon. The elephant fence not only safeguards wildlife habitats but also ensures the safety and security of the Mutunyi community, fostering harmony between humans and wildlife.

In a parallel effort to mitigate human-wildlife conflict and promote coexistence, Lewa successfully completed the construction and handover of an 800-metre-long predator-proof fence to the Leparua community, situated north of Lewa. This initiative serves as a proactive measure to protect both livestock and wildlife, thereby enhancing the livelihoods and resilience of the local community.
